Basic Prepositions of Place Worksheets for Beginners | Mr. Greg

Understanding basic prepositions is one of the first steps in learning how to describe the world. These “position words” help students explain exactly where things are located in relation to other objects. At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, we specialize in making these foundational grammar rules clear, visual, and easy to master for young learners.

Our free printable preposition worksheets are designed specifically for absolute beginners and young ESL learners who are just starting their English journey.

What Are Basic Prepositions?

Basic prepositions (often called prepositions of place) show the relationship between two objects. In a primary or ESL classroom, we focus on the “Big Three” first because they are the most common in everyday life:

  • In: Something is inside a container or space.
  • On: Something is touching the surface of something else.
  • Under: Something is below or covered by another object.

As students grow more confident, we introduce Behind, In Front Of, and Next To.

The Basic Prepositions Reference Table

PrepositionExample Sentence
InThe pencil is in the box.
OnThe book is on the desk.
UnderThe cat is under the chair.
Next ToThe ball is next to the boy.
BetweenThe apple is between two bananas.

Why Start with Basic Prepositions?

  • Essential Vocabulary: Prepositions are “high-frequency” words. They appear in almost every English sentence, making them vital for early literacy.
  • Spatial Reasoning: Learning these words helps children develop spatial awareness and the ability to follow complex directions.
  • Sentence Building: Prepositions allow students to move from one-word answers to full, descriptive sentences (e.g., instead of just saying “Apple,” they can say “The apple is on the table”).

Inside Mr. Greg’s Basic Preposition Pack

Our worksheets use a “Look, Read, and Do” approach to ensure students truly understand the concept before they start writing:

  • The “Where is it?” Quiz: A visual worksheet where kids look at a picture and circle the correct basic preposition to match.
  • Cut and Paste Placement: A hands-on activity where kids cut out a character and glue them on, in, or under different classroom objects.
  • Sentence Tracing: Practice writing full sentences using basic positional language to build fine motor skills and grammar simultaneously.

5 Fun Ways to Practice Basic Prepositions

  1. The Mystery Box: Place a box on your desk. Put a classroom object (like a stapler or a teddy) in different spots and ask the class, “Where is it?”
  2. Body Positions: Have the students use their own bodies to act out the words. “Put your hands on your knees! Put your feet under your desk!”
  3. Drawing Dictation: Give students a blank piece of paper and give verbal directions: “Draw a sun in the sky. Draw a flower under the tree.”
  4. Simon Says: Use prepositions for every command. “Simon says put your pencil next to your paper.”
  5. Classroom Scavenger Hunt: Give students a checklist of things to find based on their location (e.g., “Find a book that is on a shelf” or “Find a bag under a chair”).
