Free -FT Ending Blend Worksheets | CVCC Phonics for Kindergarten

Is it a gift or a raft? At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, we provide free printable -FT word worksheets to help young readers navigate the tricky world of ending blends.

The -FT blend is a final consonant cluster where the air flows through the teeth for the /f/ and then stops suddenly for the /t/. Mastering this quick transition is a huge win for beginning readers and a major step toward reading fluency!

What is the -FT Ending Blend?

An ending blend is when two consonants sit side-by-side at the end of a word. Unlike digraphs (like sh or ch), you can still hear both sounds in a blend—they just move very fast! For the -FT blend, students must learn to connect the soft “f” sound to the sharp “t” sound without adding a vowel sound in between.

Common -FT Words for Kindergarten:

  • Gift: A special present for a birthday or a holiday.
  • Lift: To pick something up or go up in an elevator.
  • Raft: A flat boat used to float on the water.
  • Soft: Like a fluffy pillow or the fur of a tiny kitten.
  • Left: A direction (the opposite of right) or what is remaining after a meal.
  • Sift: To shake flour through a small screen while baking a cake.

Why are -FT Words Important?

  • Ending Sound Awareness: It trains the ear to catch the very last sound in a word. New readers often “drop” the final consonant, so practicing -FT helps them listen all the way to the end.
  • Articulation Practice: Practicing -FT words helps children develop the muscle control and mouth positioning needed for clear, crisp speech.
  • Vocabulary Variety: It moves students beyond simple 3-letter CVC words and introduces more descriptive language, such as soft or swift.

Inside Mr. Greg’s -FT Worksheet Pack

Our worksheets are designed to be “No-Prep” for teachers and “High-Fun” for students. Each page uses visual cues to help kids map the sounds:

  • Sound Tapping: Use “Sound Buttons” to tap each individual sound (g-i-f-t) before blending the whole word together.
  • The Raft Race: A reading game where students “float” across the page by reading -FT words correctly to reach the finish line.
  • Gift Box Spelling: Kids practice writing -FT words inside little “gift” illustrations to keep the lesson festive and engaging.
  • Sentence Builders: Fill-in-the-blank exercises using simple sentences like “The ___ is on the water” to build reading comprehension.

5 Fun Ways to Practice -FT Words

  1. The “Lift” Challenge: Place a heavy (but safe) object on the floor. Have kids say an -FT word correctly before they are allowed to “lift” it up.
  2. Unwrap the Gift: Wrap up -FT flashcards like little “gifts.” Students get to unwrap a card and read the word aloud to the class.
  3. Soft or Hard? Use a tray with “soft” items (cotton balls, feathers) and “hard” items (rocks, blocks). Have students label only the “soft” items with an -FT word tag.
  4. Raft Building: Use popsicle sticks or straws to build a tiny raft. Challenge kids to write as many -FT words as possible on the “logs” of their raft.
  5. Listen for the Stop: Say words like cliff (ends in F) and clift (a nonsense -FT word). Have kids clap only when they hear the “stop” sound /t/ at the end.
