Is there a hand in the sand? At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, we offer free printable -ND word worksheets to help young readers bridge the gap between simple 3-letter CVC words and more complex ending blends.
The -ND blend is a voiced ending consonant cluster. Because the sounds flow together so smoothly, they can sometimes be tricky for kids to hear separately. Our worksheets are designed to make these sounds clear, distinct, and easy to master!

What is the -ND Ending Blend?
An ending blend is when two consonants come together at the end of a word, and you can hear each sound distinctly. In the -ND blend, the nasal /n/ sound flows right into the voiced /d/ “stop” sound.
Common -ND Words for Kindergarten:
- Hand: What we use to wave hello or high-five a friend!
- Sand: The tiny yellow grains we find at the beach or in a sandbox.
- Pond: A small, still body of water where ducks and frogs live.
- Wind: Moving air that blows the leaves off the trees.
- Bend: To make something curved instead of straight, like a straw.
- Band: A group of people playing musical instruments together.
Why Teach -ND Words?
- Overcoming Nasal Deletion: It is very common for children to “drop” the /n/ and spell hand as “had.” Practicing these worksheets trains their ears to hear that nasal sound before the final /d/.
- Expanding Vocabulary: -ND words include a great mix of high-frequency verbs (bend, lend, send) and nouns (land, pond, wind), giving kids more tools to build descriptive sentences.
- Rhyming Power: Since -ND words rhyme easily (hand, sand, land), they are excellent for building phonemic awareness through “word family” patterns.
Inside Mr. Greg’s -ND Worksheet Pack
Our worksheets use the “Look, Say, Map, Write” method to build permanent reading memories in young brains:
- Sound Boxes (Elkonin Boxes): Kids put one sound in each box (h-a-n-d) to ensure they physically account for the nasal ‘n’ and the final ‘d’.
- The -ND Word Search: A fun, low-pressure way to practice spotting words like wind, bond, and send in a grid.
- Picture Match-Up: Students draw a line from the written word to the correct image, such as a pond or a musical band.
- Sentence Fluency: Practice reading short, simple sentences like “The sand is hot” or “I have a big hand” to see the words in action.
5 Fun Ways to Practice -ND Words
- The Sand Tray: Have students practice writing -ND words with their fingers in a tray of actual sand. The tactile sensation helps the brain remember the spelling!
- Hand Prints: Paint a student’s hand and press it onto paper. Once it dries, have them write as many -ND words as they can find inside the fingers of the handprint.
- The Pond Jump: Place blue paper “pond” shapes on the floor with -ND words written on them. Students must read the word correctly before they are allowed to “jump” into the pond.
- Rubber Band Stretch: Use a large rubber band. Have kids stretch it out slowly as they say the -ND blend to feel how the two sounds stay connected but are still separate.
- Windy Words: Use a straw to blow a cotton ball across a table. Each time the cotton ball stops, the student must read an -ND word card to earn a point.
