Free -NT Ending Blend Worksheets | CVCC Words for Kindergarten

Once students are comfortable with 3-letter CVC words, the next big step is tackling ending blends. At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, we provide free printable -NT word worksheets to help young readers master CVCC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant-Consonant) patterns.

Learning to blend two consonants at the end of a word is a vital skill for building reading fluency and shifting from simple decoding to fluent reading.

What is the -NT Ending Blend?

An ending blend (or consonant cluster) is when two consonants come together at the end of a word, and you can still hear each individual sound. In the -NT blend, the “n” and the “t” sounds slide together quickly.

Common -NT Words for Kindergarten:

  • Tent: A little house made of cloth used for camping in the woods.
  • Ant: A tiny, busy insect that loves picnics!
  • Mint: A green leaf that tastes cool and fresh, or a type of candy.
  • Bent: When something is no longer straight, like a bent paperclip.
  • Hunt: To look very carefully for something that is hidden.
  • Went: The past tense of “go” (e.g., “Yesterday, I went to the park”).

Why Teach CVCC Ending Blends?

  • Phonemic Awareness: It challenges kids to hear that fourth sound at the end of a word. Beginner readers often “drop” the ‘n’ and just say “tet” instead of “tent.”
  • Decoding Skills: Mastering the -NT blend helps children decode hundreds of new words across different vowel groups (short a, e, i, and u).
  • Spelling Foundations: Learning that “tent” needs both an ‘n’ and a ‘t’ builds the muscle memory needed for accurate writing.

Inside Mr. Greg’s -NT Worksheet Pack

Our resources use multisensory strategies to help the -NT sound “stick” during literacy centers:

  • Tap and Blend: Use “Sound Buttons” to tap out each letter (t-e-n-t) before sliding them together to form the word.
  • NT Word Matching: Match clear illustrations of tents, ants, and mints to their correctly spelled CVCC words.
  • Sentence Fluency: Practice reading short, repetitive sentences like “The ant is in the tent” to build confidence.
  • Ending Blend Sorting: A challenge where kids determine if a word ends with -NT or a different sound, like -ND or -ST.

5 Fun Ways to Practice -NT Words

  1. The Indoor “Camping” Trip: Set up a small pop-up tent or a blanket fort in the classroom. Give students “supplies” (word cards) that only end in -NT to bring inside their camp.
  2. Sound Stretching: Use a thick rubber band. Stretch it out slowly as you say “nnn-ttt” to show how the sounds are separate but connected.
  3. Ant on a Mission: Draw a trail of “ants” across a piece of paper. Write a different -NT word on each ant for students to read as they “walk” their fingers along the trail.
  4. Mystery Word Building: Use letter tiles. Give the student the “e” and the “nt” and see how many different words they can make by changing the first letter (B-ent, L-ent, S-ent, T-ent).
  5. Listen and Jump: Play a game where you say a list of words. Students stay still for most words but must jump as high as they can when they hear a word that ends in the -NT blend!
