Free -ET Word Family Phonics Worksheets for Kindergarten | Mr. Greg

Building reading fluency starts with recognizing patterns. At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, our -ET word family worksheets are designed to help kindergarteners and ESL students master “Short E” sounds.

By focusing on CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words like jet, net, and pet, we give young readers the tools to blend sounds and decode new words with confidence.

What is the -ET Word Family?

The -ET family belongs to the “Short E” vowel group. Since these words share the same ending sound (the rime), they rhyme! This makes them much easier for children to memorize, read, and spell compared to learning words in isolation.

Common -ET Words for Kindergarten:

  • Jet: A very fast airplane that flies high in the sky.
  • Net: Something used for catching fish, butterflies, or soccer balls.
  • Pet: A friendly animal, like a cat or a dog, that lives with us.
  • Wet: What happens when you jump in a puddle or go out in the rain!
  • Vet: A special doctor who helps sick animals get better.
  • Met: When you see a friend or say hello to someone new.

Why Teach the -ET Word Family?

  • Phonemic Awareness: It helps kids hear the middle vowel sound “e,” which is often one of the hardest sounds for young learners to master.
  • Rhyming Foundation: Learning -ET words helps children understand the concept of rhyming, which is a key predictor of future reading success.
  • Blending Skills: It teaches “Onset and Rime”—the ability to change the first letter (like ‘J’ to ‘N’) while keeping the ending sound the same to create a new word.

Inside the Mr. Greg -ET Phonics Pack

Our free Short E worksheets use a variety of “Read and Do” methods to keep learning interactive and fun:

  • Sound Buttons: Practice “pressing” each individual sound (j-e-t) before blending them together into a full word.
  • -ET Word Tracing: Improve handwriting and spelling at the same time by tracing common -et vocabulary.
  • Picture-to-Word Match: A visual comprehension activity where kids draw a line from the word “net” to the correct illustration.
  • The -ET Sentence Builder: Simple, repetitive sentences like “The pet is wet” to help kids practice reading these words in a real context.

5 Creative Ways to Teach -ET Words

  1. The Toy “Vet” Station: Set up a small vet clinic in your classroom or home. Use labels for the Pet, the Net (to catch the pet), and a towel in case the pet is Wet!
  2. Sound Blending Slide: Draw a slide on your whiteboard. Put the “E-T” at the bottom and let consonants like ‘J’, ‘N’, and ‘P’ “slide” down to join them and make a new word.
  3. Short E Word Sort: Mix up -ET and -AT words. Have students sort them into two different “word houses” based on their middle vowel sound.
  4. Sky Writing: Have students use their “magic fingers” to write -ET words in the air while saying each sound (e-t… ET!) loudly.
  5. Build a Jet: Use blocks or cardboard to build a “Jet.” Every time a student adds a new piece to the jet, they have to read an -ET word from a flashcard.
