Free -NS Ending Worksheets | Plural CVC Words & Phonics

Do you see one fan or two fans? At Mr. Greg – English Teacher, we offer free printable -NS word worksheets designed to help students master this essential plural ending.

The -NS ending is a common nasal blend that appears when we make words plural. It’s a fantastic way to teach kids that the letter ‘s’ has a “hidden” sound: the buzzing /z/!

What is the -NS Ending?

The -NS ending usually occurs when we add an ‘s’ to a word that ends with the letter ‘n’.

The “Vibrating” Rule: Because the letter ‘n’ is a “voiced” sound (your vocal cords vibrate when you say it), the ‘s’ that follows it catches that vibration and turns into a /z/ sound.

Common -NS Words for Kindergarten:

  • Fans: What we use to stay cool on a hot day.
  • Bins: Containers where we put our toys or recycle our paper.
  • Hens: Mother chickens that lay eggs on the farm.
  • Pens: What we use to write in ink.
  • Pins: Tiny, sharp metal points used for sewing.
  • Buns: Small loaves of bread for hot dogs or burgers.

Why are -NS Words Important?

  • Grammar Foundation: It reinforces the concept of plurals—showing that the ending changes when the quantity changes.
  • Spelling Mastery: By practicing -NS words, kids learn to resist the urge to use the letter ‘z’ for words like hens or fans.
  • Phonemic Awareness: It helps students hear the “nasal” /n/ before the final buzzing sound, which is a key step in advanced decoding.

Inside Mr. Greg’s -NS Worksheet Pack

Our worksheets focus on identifying the /z/ sound while maintaining the correct ‘s’ spelling:

  • The “Buzzing S” Hunt: Circle all the words where the ‘s’ makes a /z/ sound.
  • One vs. Many Matching: Draw a line from the single object (bin) to the plural group (bins).
  • Trace and Pluralize: Students trace the base CVC word and then add the ‘s’ to create the plural form.
  • Fill-in-the-Blank Sentences: Practice reading sentences like “The hens are in the pen” or “Put the pins in the bins.”

5 Fun Ways to Practice -NS Words

  1. The “Fans” Experiment: Use a small battery-operated fan. Every time a student reads an -NS word correctly, they get to turn on the fan for 5 seconds of “cool down” time!
  2. Bin Sorting: Set up three bins labeled with different vowels. Have students sort word cards like fans, hens, and bins into the correct container.
  3. The Bee Buzz: Have students pretend to be bees. Every time they say an -NS word, they have to stretch out the final sound: “fannn-zzzz.”
  4. Bun Shop: Set up a pretend bakery with paper buns. Customers have to ask for “two buns” or “three buns” to practice the plural ending.
  5. Voice Check: Have kids put their hands on their throats while saying “hen” and “hens.” Ask them if they can feel the “buzz” all the way through the end of the word.
