The Life Cycle of a Butterfly: Free Primary Science Worksheets

The transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly is one of nature’s most magical examples of complete metamorphosis. This process allows the insect to grow and change its entire body structure to survive in different environments.

Our free butterfly life cycle worksheets are designed to help primary students visualize and understand each stage of this journey.

The 4 Stages of Metamorphosis

A butterfly’s life cycle consists of four distinct stages. Each stage has a specific purpose, from eating to resting to flying.

Stage 1: The Egg

A female butterfly lays her eggs on a specific type of leaf (the “host plant”). These eggs are tiny, round, or oval. The plant chosen is very important because it will become the food for the next stage.

Stage 2: The Larva (The Caterpillar)

Once the egg hatches, a larva emerges. We know this as a caterpillar.

  • Eating: The caterpillar’s only job is to eat the host plant.
  • Molting: As it grows, its skin becomes too tight. It sheds its skin multiple times—these phases are called instars.

Stage 3: The Pupa (The Chrysalis)

When the caterpillar is fully grown, it forms a hard shell called a chrysalis.

Note for Teachers: Butterflies make a chrysalis, while moths make a cocoon (which is wrapped in silk). Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar’s body breaks down and reforms into a butterfly!

Stage 4: The Adult Butterfly

The chrysalis splits open, and the adult butterfly emerges. Its wings are initially damp and crumpled. The butterfly pumps fluid into them until they are strong enough to fly. Its main goal now is to find nectar and lay eggs to start the cycle again.

Fun Butterfly Facts for Kids

  • Taste with Feet: Butterflies have taste sensors on their feet to help them find the right plants for their eggs.
  • Liquid Diet: Butterflies drink through a straw-like tongue called a proboscis.
  • Migration: Some butterflies, like the Monarch, fly thousands of miles to stay warm during the winter.
