The Life Cycle of a Frog: Free Primary Science Worksheets

The journey of a frog is one of nature’s most amazing transformations. This process, known as metamorphosis, involves a creature changing its entire body structure to move from life in the water to life on land.

Our free frog life cycle worksheets are designed for primary students to help them visualize and label each stage of this incredible process.

What is the Life Cycle of a Frog?

A frog is an amphibian, meaning it spends part of its life in water and part on land. The life cycle consists of four main stages:

Stage 1: The Egg (Frog Spawn)

A female frog lays thousands of eggs at once in a pond. These eggs float in a clump known as frog spawn. The jelly-like coating protects the growing embryos.

Stage 2: The Tadpole

After 1–3 weeks, a tadpole hatches. At this stage, it looks more like a fish than a frog!

  • Gills: They use gills to breathe underwater.
  • Tail: They have a long tail to help them swim.
  • Diet: They eat algae and tiny water plants.

Stage 3: The Froglet (Young Frog)

During this stage, the “metamorphosis” really begins:

  • Legs: The tadpole grows back legs first, followed by front legs.
  • Lungs: It starts developing lungs so it can breathe air.
  • Tail: The tail begins to shrink (reabsorb) as the body uses it for nutrients.

Stage 4: The Adult Frog

Once the tail has completely disappeared, the frog is an adult. It can now hop out of the water and onto land. It will eventually return to the water to lay its own eggs, starting the cycle all over again.

Fun Facts for Primary Students

  • Did you know? A group of frogs is called an “army.”
  • Skin Drinkers: Frogs don’t drink water with their mouths; they absorb it through their skin!
  • Super Sight: Frogs have teeth in their upper jaws to hold prey in place, but they use their big eyeballs to help push food down their throats.
