Mystery Writing

  • Anything interesting about the character?

Step 2. Setting

Choose a place you know well as you must be able to describe the setting in great detail to give the reader a better understanding. School, your home, your neighbourhood are great choices.

Step 3. The Puzzle

Your characters needs something to happen that causes the mystery. It can be something bizarre/weird, like for example, the box of toys moved by itself!

  • Be creative! It can be something that is not normal.
  • Tie it into the setting to avoid confusion.
  • Your character must be involved.

Step 4. Building the Puzzle

You don’t want your character to solve the mystery instantly! There should be a number of steps before they are able to solve the problem. You can be creative as you like.

  • Maybe something bad happened and they need to try something else!
  • Something changed in the story that made the character do something else!
  • The character may have found a clue and had to go to the next task.

Step 5. The Final Part of the Puzzle

Before solving the mystery, there should a final part of the puzzle that draws in the most attention of the reader. This will help keep the story interesting and thrilling.

  • Maybe you character rescues somebody!
  • Something dangerous happened but they overcame it.
  • Maybe the character found something surprising!

Step 6. Solving the Mystery

This part your character will have solved the puzzle that you came up with in step 3.

  • It is important to relate back to step 3 to ensure no confusion.

Step 7. The Ending

The best finish to the story is what happens next. You can end it on a happy note, or on another cliff hanger! Maybe your character found another mystery!

Sequence writing worksheets designed for primary students to test their ability to retell a story in the the correct order of events. Understanding the order of events in a story is an important skill for both reading and writing as it showcases their comprehension levels.

Sequence Writing

Why is Sequencing Important?

Sequencing is an important everyday skill, as to get a desired outcome, one must be able to follow certain steps. If students are able to clearly explain in detail the order of events, it showcases deep understanding of the process and the ability to follow instructions thoroughly.

For example, in science we must be able to follow a set list of instructions while performing experiments. Any change in the order can hinder the results of the experiment. Same with a recipe. To bake a cake or any other kind of dish, you must follow the sequence to get the desired final product.

This set of worksheets is fantastic for students to build up their sequencing skills. The pictures clearly shows them the order of events, allowing them to examine how the events change and lead to one another. I kept it simple with only four pictures, with distinctive changes in each. Students can use transition words first, second, third and lastly with relative ease.

I suggest before using the worksheet, get them to understand the fundamentals of sequencing first. Cut out the pictures or use a set of your own, mix them up, and get them to put them in the right order. Ask each student to explain the order of events to see how they transition between the events and their sequencing thought process.

Creative restrictions

One of the biggest problems young learners of the English language is creativity. Thinking outside the box with a limited vocabulary range can harm the quality of a students work. To give the students more confidence, we should break down a complicated task with many simple tasks.

A great book will have a detailed setting, allowing the reader to engage with the story on a higher level. The more detail, the better imaginative picture the reader can create.

Why is a setting of a story important?

If the reader doesn’t know where the story is taking place, they will get lost instantly. They only rely on your words to visualize the story you are trying to convey.

The setting is not only the place, but the time of actions. A great setting will allow the writer and the readers to structure events clearly. It can enhance the details of characters if written in greater detail. For example, a dark setting will portray a scary atmosphere, great for enhancing the feelings of a character!
